APNA PMH Nurse Suicide Prevention Training Renewal Course

This self-paced online course is for APNA Suicide Prevention Providers who have previously completed the APNA Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention. APNA Suicide Prevention Providers must complete this course every three (3) years to keep their provider status current and ensure that their practice aligns with the most up-to-date best practices. The course reviews skills presented in the initial competency based training as well as current evidence-based nursing knowledge and resources to enrich practice and competence in suicide prevention, assessment, and care management of persons at risk for suicide.

Registrants have 90 days from date of registration to complete the content and earn nursing continuing professional development contact hours and a Suicide Prevention Provider Card. This printable card is valid for three (3) years and serves as proof of successful completion of the renewal training.

Target Audience:  PMH-RNs, RNs, and APRNs that are card-holding APNA Suicide Prevention Providers who previously completed the APNA Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention

This course is self-paced with supplemental activities (handouts, glossary, references and case studies). 

  • Module 1: Phenomenology of Suicide
  • Module 2: Suicide Risk Assessment and Risk Formulation
  • Module 3: Safety Planning
  • Module 4: Environmental Safety

Program Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the phenomenology of suicide.
  2. Perform a focused risk assessment. 
  3. Document patient level of risk for suicide. 
  4. Perform a suicide risk assessment. 
  5. Develop a collaborative safety plan. 
  6. Discuss environmental safety and risk mitigation. 
  7. Understand how to incorporate the APNA Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Essential Competencies for Assessment and Management of Individuals at Risk for Suicide into your practice.

Nursing Continuing Professional Development:
3.5 contact hours. *To earn contact hours, participants must: complete all course modules, an evaluation, and an honor statement, as well as earn a passing score of at least 80% on all posttests. You will have three (3) tries to correctly answer the questions on the posttest. On completion, your NCPD certificate and Provider Card will be generated online and available for printing. Credit cannot be earned unless all components of the program are completed. No partial credit can be awarded.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
