Practical Nursing Strategies in Suicide Prevention 

The high prevalence of suicide is a major public health concern and nurses in non-mental health settings are uniquely positioned to make a difference in the lives of individuals at risk for suicide. This course supports and strengthens a nurse's care toolbox, in a non-mental health settings, providing a skillset to screen and use the Assessment, Intervention, Documentation, and Evaluation (AIDE) algorithm to initiate life-saving interventions for patients at risk for suicide. The course content is based on the APNA Essential Competencies for Assessment and Management of Individuals at Risk for Suicide. An expert in the field of psychiatric-mental health nursing delivers content and evidence-based strategies that nurses will be able to apply with people for the prevention of suicide.

The course is self-paced with supplemental activities and resources, including handouts, glossary of terms, references, and other resources. It focuses on evidence-based nursing knowledge which data show increases non-PMH-RNs’ confidence in their individual practice, as well as their competence in the nursing skills of suicide prevention, screening and initial management of persons at risk for suicide.

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Understand the fundamental aspects of suicide phenomenology.
  2. Discuss the importance of suicide risk screening.
  3. Discuss how to utilize the AIDE algorithm.
  4. Communicate findings and interventions to team members.
  5. Identify protective factors.
  6. Discuss the development of an initial collaborative safety plan.
  7. Recognize and document potential unit-based environmental hazards.

  • Upon completion of this course, 65% of learners will feel more confident and competent providing care for persons at risk for suicide.
