Participant Course: APNA Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention - Acute Care Settings
Course Description:
The high prevalence of suicide is a major public health concern and acute care nurses are uniquely positioned to make a difference in the lives of individuals at risk for suicide. This course supports and strengthens acute care nursing skills to assess and provide life-saving interventions with APNA’s Essential Competencies for Assessment and Management of Individuals at Risk for Suicide. Acute care nurses learn from leading field experts and will be able to apply the evidence-based tools for the prevention of suicide.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to:
- Define the fundamental aspects of suicide phenomenology.
- Implement competency-based suicide assessment techniques into patient assessments using the AIDE algorithm and the warning signs mnemonic (IS PATH WARM).
- Effectively communicate risk assessment findings and interventions, using both written and verbal documentation, to healthcare team members.
- Identify protective factors.
- Develop an initial shared safety plan.
- Recognize potential patient and unit-based environmental hazards.
Continuing Education Credit:
1.5 Contact Hours. *In order to receive contact hours for the program, participants must: complete the Pre-Course Self-Assessment Survey, attend the Live Training in its entirety, the Post-Course Self-Assessment Survey, and the Overall Evaluation. Once all course components have been completed, the certificate will be generated online, available for print immediately. Credit cannot be earned unless all components are completed. No partial credit will be given.

Participants who register and complete all requirements of the full training receive:

- 1 laminated AIDE algorithm (Provided by the facilitator)
You will register for the course one time, under one account, using one email address. This account will be used to complete the Pre- and Post-Course Self-Assessment Surveys. You will be prompted to login or create an APNA account. If you already have an APNA account and do not remember the username and password, contact APNA at 855-863-APNA (2762). New users will establish a username and password at the time of registration.
The content will be presented in person. The course requires 1.5 hours to complete.
Step 1: Prior to the Live Training, participants must:
1. Register with APNA for the Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention - Acute Care Settings course.
2. Complete the online Acknowledgement and Pre-Course Self-Assessment Survey.
Step 2: Live Training - participants must:
1. Arrive on time for the Live Training in order to be admitted to the course.
2. Attend the entire Live Training and participate in the interactive activities.
Step 3: Post Live Training, participants must:
1. Complete the online Post-Course Self-Assessment Survey and the Overall Evaluation.
2. The certificate will be generated online and available for participants to print immediately after completing the online components.
