2034-16: Using Electronic Devices to Improve the Patient Care Experience on an Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit

Patients are seldom allowed to use cell phones and personal electronic devices on inpatient behavioral health units.  This session reviews the results of a hospital which allowed patient access to these devices.

Session Objectives
Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify security and privacy concerns regarding patient use of cell phones and personal electronic devices on inpatient psychiatric units.
  2. Identify interventions that can be taken to minimize the security and privacy risk of cell phones on BHS units.
  3. Identify the benefits to behavioral health patients, of maintaining contact with family and friends throughout the hospitalization.
