2011-17:  VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain

This activity will discuss the evidence-based principles for the use of opioids for the treatment of chronic pain and how to appropriately taper or discontinue opioids in our patients when appropriate.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the evidence-based process used to develop the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline: Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain by describing how it adheres to the principles established by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM).
  2. Apply evidence-based recommendations for the use of opioids in the treatment of chronic pain by describing the recommendations for the use of opioids in the treatment of chronic pain.
  3. Describe the evidence based recommendations for tapering opioids and how to reduce opioid dosage in a patient where the risk of continued use at the current dose outweighs the benefits.
