Presenters: Julie B. Perry, DNP, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC; Laura G. Leahy, DrNP, APRN, FAANP, FAAN
Disclosures: The APNA planners and faculty have no relevant financial relationships to disclose. Off-label uses will be discussed during this presentation.
Session Length: 1 hour 45 minutes
Target Audience: RN, APRN
Learning Outcome:
Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss three ways in which PMH nurses can assist patients in navigating the facts vs. myths related to GLP-1 receptor agonists to ensure appropriate use.
Key Takeaway(s):
- GLP-1 agonists are currently indicated for the treatment of T2DM, Weight and CVD Risk but may have other applications.
- Compounded forms of GLP-1s lack efficacy and safety data and are largely unregulated, increasing safety concerns.
- Nurses can help patients who want to learn about, or are taking, GLP-1s by explaining the risks and benefits, supporting healthy behavioral changes, and helping them find reputable prescribers and suppliers.
