Facilitator Training of APNA Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention - Spring 2020

Through weekly online modules and a two-day live intensive session, this course trains experienced nurses to deliver the APNA Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention.  Facilitators who successfully complete this course gain content expertise in suicide prevention and the facilitation of an educational training.  They are able to work with institutions to deliver the training and are also included in the group of facilitators with whom APNA coordinates when organizations schedule a training through APNA.


Target Audience:
PMH-RN Nurse Educators

Disclosures:  The presenters and planners have no conflict of interest or commercial support to disclose.  Off-label use of medications will not be discussed.

Pre-Requisites:
In order to participate in this course, individuals must have:

  • Successfully completed the APNA Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention
  • Two or more years’ experience working as a psychiatric-mental health nurse in a behavioral health setting
  • Teaching experience in the hospital, community, or academic setting

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to: 

  1. Discuss the nine APNA Suicide Competencies and their application to practice.
  2. Demonstrate effective teaching strategies that facilitate optimum participant engagement with the course material.
  3. Implement the APNA process for planning, managing and conducting a Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention course.

Registration Fees: $500 for APNA members / $750 for nonmembers
*Travel and lodging for the required in-person component of the training are not included in registration fee.


Nursing Continuing Professional Development:
15.0 contact hours. *In order to receive nursing continuing professional development contact hours for the program, participants must: participate in and successfully complete all course components, including the on-site facilitator training and testing.  No partial credit will be awarded.


Cancellation Policy:
We do not issue refunds for the registration cost of the Competency Based Facilitator Training for Suicide Prevention once the purchase is completed.  If you are unable to complete the online and live training per your registration schedule, it may be possible to reschedule your registration for a future training.  Further details regarding our cancellation policy are outlined here.

MANDATORY ONLINE TRAINING:  Becoming a Content Expert of Suicide Prevention
February 9 - May 17, 2020

  • The online portion is composed of 6 bi-weekly learning modules, with module assignments due every two weeks.  All learning modules and assignments are mandatory.*
  • Course work includes articles, viewing and submitting videos, case studies, discussion board posts, group work, and module quizzes. 
  • To progress successfully through this course, each online Module must be completed before the learner may advance to the next Module.  
  • Readings and activities are estimated to require 2-3 hours of your time per week.
  • APNA holds the copyright for all course materials. Materials may not be copied or shared without the written permission of APNA.

*Late or Missed Assignments and Activities
APNA understands that emergency situations arise that may cause an occasional late or missed assignment.  The learner will need to contact the course faculty in order to coordinate submitting the assignment as soon as possible.  Frequent late or missed assignments and activities may result in the need to withdraw from this course.  APNA will work with the learner to discuss deferring and participating in a future opportunity for facilitator training.
