Course Description:

The purpose of this hybrid course is to train facilitators who will educate psychiatric mental health registered nurses on the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Essential Competencies for Assessment and Management of Individuals at Risk for Suicide. 

This hybrid course requires independent reading and learning, posts on Member Bridge Learning Community and virtual meeting attendance using GoToMeeting™. The structure of this hybrid course is divided into two parts: 
   1) Becoming a Content Expert of Suicide Prevention (first 8 weeks)
   2) Learning to Facilitate the Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention (last 8 weeks) 

The facilitator course Modules align with the APNA Suicide Competencies throughout this course. Please refer to the course outline and APNA Suicide Competencies here

To progress successfully through this course, each online Module will need to be completed before advancing to the next Module. A schedule of required readings, activities and assignment due dates will be provided by APNA. Readings and activities are estimated to require 2-3 hours of your time per week. Assignments are due by the 10th day after each Module has been assigned.

Pre-requisites:
In order to participate in this course, individuals must have successfully completed the APNA Competency Based Training for Suicide Prevention (6.5 hour course) including the required online components, must have teaching experience in the hospital, community or academic setting, and must create a free, personal Dropbox™ account to upload assignments.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to: 

  1. Describe the major differences between an admission assessment and risk assessment for suicide.
  2. Describe/demonstrate how nurses apply of each of nine Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Essential Competencies for Assessment and Management of Individuals At Risk for Suicide.
  3. Illustrate how to formulate the risk assessment for suicide using the CASE approach, how to document the risk determination and interventions, how to develop a collaborative written safety plan, how to assess and modify the environment for safety and update the written safety plan at discharge when teaching the competency-based training.
  4. Use evidence-based measurement tools to increase accuracy in screening and diagnosing of persons at risk for suicide.
  5. Demonstrate all 6 core content areas in 10-minute teaching components of the curriculum by the end of the course.


Continuing Education Credit:

15.0 contact hours. *In order to earn contact hours for the program, participants must: successfully complete all course components including the facilitator certification testing.
