4017-16: Historical Trauma and Mental Health among Native Americans
This presentation will explore historical trauma among Native Americans and its associations with psychopathology. We will then discuss a conceptual model for nursing in Native American individuals, specific assessment tools, and questions regarding historical trauma. Lastly, we will explore “retraditionalization” as a way to facilitate recovery from historical trauma.

1. Describe the causes, symptoms, and mental health impact of historical trauma among Native Americans.
2. Give three examples of how nursing practice for Native Americans can be changed to accommodate historical trauma.
3. Describe "retraditionalization" and referral resources for traditional healing in the Native American community.
