This presentation will inform psychiatric providers about the current opioid epidemic in the U.S. and broaden their awareness of the associated health care implications.   Presenter:  Deborah Salani DNP, PMHNP-BC, NE-BC

A Protocol for Sweet Relief:  Using Psychotropic Medications in Supportive Cancer Care
Psychotropic medications are commonly used to treat the mental and physical health needs of cancer survivors. Review of an treatment protocol for promoting the effective use of selected drugs to promote quality of life in cancer patients will be provided.   Presenter:  Leigh A. Minchew DNP, APRN, WHNP-BC

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the current opioid epidemic occurring in the United States including the usage of heroin, fentanyl and carfentanil.
  2. Identify the three types of medications used in the treatment of opioid addiction and list and discuss the three specific actions the U.S. Surgeon General has recommended to Turn the Tide on the opioid crisis.
  3. Summarize common mental and physical health needs of cancer survivors.
  4. Justify incorporation of psychotropic drugs for supportive cancer care.
