This mini concurrent session includes two 20-minute presentations (described below) plus Q&A.

The Connection Between Food And Mood - What The Research Is Telling Us
There is a growing body of research showing the correlation between food and mental health. Learn the significance of arachidonic acid, folate, tryptophan, mercury and artificial sweeteners as well as beans, greens, grains and vegetables on depression and mood.

Does a Mindful Eating Intervention Decrease Binge Eating Episodes?
A nine-week group intervention on mindful eating was administered to a group of self-identified binge eating women taking psychotropic drugs to decrease binge eating in this population. Binge eating and levels of depression decreased to a 95% confidence level and participants were highly satisfied with the intervention.

Session Objectives
Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  1. Name 2 foods which could be eaten to improve symptoms of depression.
  2. Identify foods containing arachidonic acid which impacts mood including depression and anxiety and overall mental health.
  3. Understand difficulties individuals can have keeping weight normal while taking many of the psychotropic medications prescribed to treat psychiatric conditions.
  4. Educate participants on the use of mindful eating to teach patients new ways to manage eating patterns and cravings for food.
