2015-16: Fatal Attractions: Psychotropics, Cardio-Pulmonary Drugs, and AntiRetrovirals...Deadly Combinations

Most psychiatric patients experience co-occurring medical illnesses. Drug-drug and drug-disease interactions are increasing as the numbers of available medications increase in both psychiatric and non-psychiatric illnesses.  A brief review of the etiology of the top 10 common interactions occurring in patients with co-morbid medical conditions will be presented.

Session Objectives
Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
1.  Review the Cytochrome P450 terminology describing clinically significant interactions occurring between psychotropic, cardio-pulmonary, and anti-retroviral medications.
2.  Differentiate common psychiatric/non-psychiatric drug-drug and drug-disease combinations that have the potential for serious adverse reactions.
3.  Discuss interventions to avoid/reverse interactions when they occur.
